Each SWCD in the state is made up of five elected Soil Commissioners. Soil Commissioners take part in monthly meetings, carry our soil and water conservation laws and programs, provide education and information related to our natural resources, and help direct financial incentive programs.

Districts serve as local sponsors for watershed projects, resource conservation and development areas, and work closely with a number of local, state and federal agencies, as well as with local groups and organizations. Key partnerships include the Conservation Districts of Iowa, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
